Two different prawns
Vannamei, also called Pacific White, is the prawn most Indian farms raise today. It grows quickly in pond water, which is why it is the everyday, better-value prawn.
Black Tiger is native to Indian coastal waters. It grows slower and to a bigger size, with its tell-tale dark stripes, and fewer farms raise it.
We farm both in our own ponds in Andhra and bring them to our Manikonda shop on ice, never frozen, with no sulphites or STPP.
Questions
Which is better, Vannamei or Black Tiger prawns?
Neither is better; they suit different dishes. Vannamei is mild and tender, the everyday prawn for curries, pulusu and fry. Black Tiger is firmer and sweeter, and holds up on a grill or in a biryani for guests.
Which costs less?
Vannamei. At our Manikonda shop Vannamei is ₹480–₹669 per kg and Black Tiger ₹760–₹1209 per kg, by size, for whole prawns cleaned free.
Why are Black Tiger prawns more expensive?
They grow slower and larger, and fewer are farmed, so each kilo costs more to raise. You also get fewer, bigger prawns per kilo.
Which prawn is best for biryani?
A large prawn that stays juicy through the dum: Vannamei Large for everyday biryani, Tiger Jumbo when you are cooking for guests.
Do they cook differently?
Both cook in a few minutes. Bigger prawns need a little longer, and Tiger stays firm where Vannamei turns tender. Stop as soon as they turn opaque, or either will go rubbery.
