Why prawn prices move
- Size. Bigger prawns (a lower count per kilo) take longer to grow, so they cost more per kilo.
- Species. Black Tiger grows slower and larger than Vannamei, and is priced higher.
- The harvest. We price each batch from our ponds. A big harvest of one size can bring its price down for a few days.
- Season and festivals. Demand rises around festivals and weekends, and harvests slow in some months.
Questions
What is the price of prawns in Hyderabad today?
At our Manikonda shop, Vannamei prawns are ₹480–₹669 per kg and Black Tiger prawns ₹760–₹1209 per kg, by size. Today we have Vannamei Small at ₹480, Vannamei Medium at ₹565. The board at the top of this page is updated from the shop.
Is the price per kg of whole or cleaned prawns?
Per kg of whole prawns, the way they come out of the pond. We peel and de-vein them for free, and from 1 kg of whole Vannamei you take home about 550 g of cleaned prawns.
Is the online price the same as the shop price?
Yes. The website charges exactly the price on the shop board, with no online-only markup or discount. You order online and pick up at the shop, or walk in.
Why do Black Tiger prawns cost more than Vannamei?
Black Tiger prawns grow slower and bigger, and fewer are farmed, so each kilo costs more to produce. They are firmer and larger, which suits fry, grill and biryani.
How often do prawn prices change?
We set prices at the shop for each harvest batch, so they can change from one day to the next. This page shows the current board and the last ten days.
